Why Adding Up The Labels Gets It Wrong
Anything with a motor in it, a compressor, a pump, a saw, a hoist, draws several times its running current for the moment it starts. A generator sized on running load alone will sag or trip every time one of them kicks in.
Generators are rated in kVA rather than kW, and the two are not interchangeable. kVA is the apparent power the machine can deliver, kW is the real work it does, and the gap between them is the power factor of what you plug in.
Sizing is the whole job. A generator picked on the sum of the labels will trip the moment something with a motor in it starts, because starting current is several times running current. Tell us what plugs in and we will size it on the real load.

Oversizing Has Its Own Problem
A diesel generator run far below its rated load for long periods wet-stacks: unburnt fuel builds up in the exhaust and fouls the engine. Bigger is not automatically safer. Size it to the load with sensible headroom rather than picking the largest unit on the list.

Connecting a generator to a building's wiring through a power point sends power back down the supply and can kill someone working on the network.
