Working Height Is Not Platform Height
Hire listings quote working height, which is the platform height plus about two metres for a person standing on it. So a machine advertised at 9.8 metres working height puts the platform floor a bit under 8 metres up.
Measure to what your hands need to reach, not to the ceiling, then check the machine against that. Booking on the ceiling height is how people end up half a metre short on the last row of cladding.

Straight Up, Or Up And Over
Can you park the machine directly underneath the work with nothing in the way? If yes, a scissor lift is faster and carries more. If anything at all sits between the machine and the job, you want a boom.
Training, Tickets And Harnesses
In Western Australia a boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more needs a high risk work licence, issued through WorkSafe WA. Below that, and for scissor lifts, there is no high risk work licence but the operator still has to be trained and competent in the specific machine.
Most Perth sites will also ask for a Yellow Card or equivalent familiarisation, and most principal contractors want to see it before the machine is switched on.
A Boom Basket Means A Harness
Anyone in a boom lift basket wears a harness with a lanyard attached to the anchor point in the basket, not to the structure being worked on. Scissor lifts have guardrails instead and normally do not require one. Confirm your own site rule, because plenty of sites mandate a harness in both.

The Ground Under An Access Machine
An elevated platform concentrates a lot of weight into small wheels, and the higher it goes the less forgiving it gets about the surface underneath.
Check Before The Machine Arrives
- Whether the working area is a slab, compacted hardstand or loose ground
- Any service pit, drain cover or soft trench backfill on the travel route
- The gradient, because most indoor machines have a very small slope tolerance
- Overhead power lines and the exclusion distance that applies to them
- Doorway and lift dimensions if the machine has to go inside or upstairs
Rough Terrain Is A Different Machine
If the work happens off the slab, ask for a rough terrain unit rather than trying to make an indoor machine cope. They have bigger wheels, more clearance and outriggers, and they are the difference between a productive day and a machine sitting still.
